E-Bike and Bicycle Theft in China: Prevention and Recovery for Foreign Residents

Bicycles and electric bicycles make everyday travel easier, but recovery becomes difficult when the owner cannot prove which vehicle is theirs. Build a simple ownership file before you need it.

Create an ownership record

Photograph the entire bike from both sides and close-ups of the frame or vehicle number, plate or registration details where applicable, battery label, motor label, lock, accessories, scratches, and other distinctive marks. Keep the invoice, payment record, seller details, warranty, service receipts, and registration material together.

Park for evidence as well as security

Use designated, well-lit parking with controlled access or cameras where available. Lock the frame to an approved fixed point rather than securing only a wheel. Act quickly after a loss

Confirm that property staff, family, or a parking operator did not move the bike. Note the last confirmed time, exact parking spot, lock condition, and possible camera positions. Ask the camera owner to preserve relevant footage promptly; retention periods vary.

Report the theft through the local police process and provide identification, ownership evidence, photos, identifiers, location, and timeline. Ask how to obtain or reference the report. If a tracker or resale listing appears to show the bike, take screenshots and give the information to police. Do not confront anyone or attempt entry into a private location.

Protect connected accounts and payments

Remove or suspend shared access in the vehicle app only after preserving useful evidence. Check whether a stored payment method, automatic battery-swap plan, parking pass, or SIM remains linked. Change credentials if a phone number, QR code, or account token may be exposed.
