Shared Power Bank Rentals in China: A Guide for Foreign Residents

Shared power bank kiosks are common in malls, restaurants, hospitals, stations, and entertainment venues in China. The convenience is real, but an unfamiliar mini program, time-based pricing, and a failed return can turn a small rental into a long dispute.

Check the operator and price first

Use the QR code attached to the physical station and confirm that the account, mini program, and operator name match. Before authorizing payment, read the billing unit, starting fee, maximum charge, deposit or payment authorization, overdue rules, and customer-service route. Take a screenshot if the terms are not easy to find later.

Inspect the unit before charging

Check the connector type, cable, casing, and label. Do not force a connector or use a unit that looks cracked, swollen, wet, modified, or unusually hot. If the first unit is unsuitable, use the operator’s documented exchange or return process rather than leaving it loose beside the kiosk.

Keep the phone where you can monitor heat and charging behavior. A rented battery is a short-term backup, not a reason to ignore a damaged phone port or battery.

Plan the return before leaving

Open the operator’s map and identify at least two compatible return stations near your destination. A kiosk can be full, offline, behind a closed shop, or operated by another brand. Check venue closing time and do not wait until the last moment before a train, flight, or hospital appointment.

Insert the unit in the indicated direction until the station locks it. Then refresh the order and confirm that billing has stopped. A beep or light alone is not enough if the app still shows an active rental.

Resolve a failed return

Record the time, venue, station number, power-bank number, slot, and order number. Photograph the locked unit and the station without capturing bystanders or unrelated personal data. Contact support from the official order page and keep the case number and chat history.
