Quick answer
What you need to know
A safe used-car sale in China requires more than payment and key handover: verify eligibility and outstanding issues, use a traceable contract and invoice, complete official ownership transfer promptly, and retain evidence of the final registration and settlement.
- Check local buyer, quota, plate, emission, and transfer eligibility before accepting money.
- Clear fines, finance, inspections, insurance questions, and vehicle-condition disclosures.
- Use a written contract and traceable payment with a clear delivery time.
- Complete ownership transfer through the authorized process; key handover alone is not enough.
- Keep the transfer record, invoice, payment proof, plate handling evidence, and cancellation confirmations.
Selling a car in China is not finished when the buyer pays and drives away. The important endpoint is a documented ownership transfer, with plates, insurance, fines, and service accounts handled correctly.
1. Check whether the transaction can proceed
Ask the local vehicle administration office or an authorized used-car transaction service about seller and buyer identity documents, residence or registration conditions, emissions rules, local quotas, plate treatment, inspections, and any cross-city transfer restrictions.
City rules can materially change the deal. Confirm before taking a deposit.
2. Audit the vehicle record
Check for unpaid traffic violations, outstanding finance or security interests, inspection status, compulsory insurance, vehicle tax, recalls, maintenance records, spare keys, and disclosed accident history.
If you are still deciding whether to sell, Car Annual Inspection and Insurance Renewal in China explains the recurring records to gather.
3. Put the deal in writing
The contract should identify both parties and the vehicle, price and payment schedule, deposit conditions, included accessories, known defects, mileage, transfer deadline, fees, tax and insurance responsibilities, breach terms, and exact risk-handover time.
Use traceable payment and obtain the required used-vehicle sales invoice or other proof of provenance through the accepted channel. A qualified adviser can review a high-value or disputed transaction.
4. Complete formal transfer together
Official guidance commonly calls for identity documents, authorization where an agent applies, the vehicle registration certificate, vehicle license, plates, and proof of ownership transfer. The vehicle may need inspection.
Do not leave the transfer indefinitely to the buyer. Attend or use a trusted authorized agent, verify completion, and keep a copy of the new registration or transfer receipt.
5. Close the connected accounts
After the transfer is confirmed, contact the insurer about termination, refund, or transfer; remove toll-payment tags and parking accounts; delete saved home and contact data from the infotainment system; and cancel any charging, roadside, or fleet services.
For plate retention or quota use, rely on the local office’s current answer—not the buyer’s assumption.

Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Can a foreigner sell a car registered in China?
Generally an owner can transfer a registered vehicle, but identity, local eligibility, plate, quota, customs, finance, and registration rules may affect the transaction. Confirm with the local vehicle administration office.
Is giving the buyer the keys enough?
No. Complete formal ownership transfer and document the exact handover time, mileage, payment, keys, and vehicle condition.
What happens to the license plate?
Plate and quota treatment differs by city and owner status. Do not promise the plate to a buyer until the local vehicle office confirms the rule.
Should I cancel insurance immediately?
Coordinate the effective transfer time first. Ask the insurer whether coverage transfers, ends, or can be refunded, and avoid an uninsured gap.
What records should the seller retain?
Keep the contract, payment evidence, invoice, inspection and transfer record, delivery checklist, plate handling proof, and insurance or service cancellation confirmations.
