Relocate or close a home broadband account in China without surprise charges, covering account ownership, equipment returns, installation access, and final proof.
Rules and procedures can change. Check the linked official sources before acting on time-sensitive information.
Quick answer
What you need to know
Identify the named subscriber, confirm whether service can move to the new address, document equipment, and obtain written proof of relocation or closure.
- Confirm whose name and ID opened the broadband account before arranging a move or cancellation.
- Check coverage, contract term, fees, and installation access at the new address.
- Return every listed router, modem, or IPTV device and keep the receipt.
- Verify the final bill and account status after the technician visit.
Home broadband in China is tied not only to an apartment but also to a subscriber identity, service address, contract, and operator-owned equipment. Treat the internet account as a separate move-out task rather than assuming it follows the router.
Identify the account owner and contract
Find the operator, subscriber name, registered ID, account number, contract end date, payment method, and equipment list. The subscriber may be you, a landlord, an employer, or a previous tenant. Ask the operator what authorization is required if the named person cannot attend.
Check early-termination charges, prepaid balance treatment, automatic renewal, and whether an IPTV box, optical modem, router, remote control, or power adapter must be returned. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology provides telecom information and complaint channels through its official website; first give the operator a reasonable opportunity to resolve a service issue.
Choose relocation or closure
For relocation, provide the exact new building, unit, and installation date. Ask the operator to confirm coverage and whether the existing plan and equipment can move. Coordinate compound access, elevator rules, and the landlord or property manager. The property-management guide helps organize that access.
For closure, request the formal account-cancellation route. Ask what the final charge will be, where equipment is returned, and when recurring billing ends. Do not rely only on unplugging equipment or cancelling an automatic payment.
Document the handover
Photograph serial numbers and equipment condition. At a service hall or technician handover, ask for a receipt listing each returned item. Save the work order, cancellation number, final invoice, refund details, and support conversation.
After the stated completion date, check that the account shows moved or closed and that no further debit appears. If service is installed at the new home, change default Wi-Fi credentials and test coverage before the technician leaves. For general setup, see home internet in China.
Broadband move-out checklist
- Subscriber identity and authorization confirmed.
- Contract term, balance, and possible fees reviewed.
- New-address coverage and technician time booked.
- Property access arranged.
- All equipment and serial numbers recorded.
- Return or installation receipt saved.
- Final bill and account status checked.
Operator procedures differ by city, plan, and account ownership. Confirm current requirements directly with the operator and put responsibilities in writing with a landlord or employer where they control the account.
Frequently asked questions
Common questions
Can I take my router to a new apartment?
Do not assume so. Some equipment belongs to the operator and the service may require a relocation order, new optical terminal, or technician installation.
What if the broadband account is in my landlord's name?
Ask the landlord to participate or provide the authorization the operator requires. Record who will receive any refund and who is responsible for unreturned equipment.
Can I cancel broadband by stopping payment?
Stopping payment may leave the account open or create arrears. Use the operator's formal cancellation process and retain confirmation.
How early should I arrange the move?
Contact the operator before move day, especially around holidays. Coverage checks, compound access, and technician appointments can take time.
